Artsy Chair

Furniture

The developers and artists at Nintendo had a challenging job. They wanted us to be able to outfit our islands’ houses with the same furniture that fabulously rich people IRL have, but they also had to make sure they didn’t infringe on anyone’s trademarked designs. The “Artsy Chair” is a good example of how they captured the feel of famous, iconic furniture designs without outright copying them.

From what I can tell, the Artsy Chair was inspired by two famous 20th century furniture designers:

The primary inspiration of the overall shape and curves seems to be from “The Egg Chair” by Arne Jacobsen, who was a renowned Danish architect and designer. He designed the Egg Chair in 1959 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.

The addition of the two cushions in an enclosed space seems to be from “The Ball Chair”, created by Finnish interior designer Eero Aarnio in 1963.

Both are considered classics in mid-century modern and Scandinavian furniture design, and are certainly for the rich and famous. Neither of these are exact matches for the Artsy chair, but you can certainly see the inspiration from both.

Purchasable Furniture - Housewares

The artsy chair can be purchased from Nook's Cranny for 23,000 Bells or from Wardell's catalog for 20,700 Poki.
arne jacobsen egg chairYou can still get an original Ball Chair from the authorized manufacturer of Eero Aarnio designs for about $8000 USD. An official Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair by Fritz Hansen will cost you a mere $11,000 USD. That's a lotta bells.

You can go to an online shop like Interior Icons to buy a high quality replica of the Egg Chair and the Ball Chair; they'll cost you over $1,000, but believe it or not that's pretty much par for the course for any high-end furniture. If you shop around, you should be able to find some high-quality replicas for under $800, such as this offering from NPD Furniture on Amazon.

And of course, there's always the option of searching Etsy for some adorable dollhouse furniture for the rest of us!
