The developers and artists at Nintendo had a challenging job. They wanted us to be able to outfit our islands’ houses with the same furniture that fabulously rich people IRL have, but they also had to make sure they didn’t infringe on anyone’s trademarked designs. The “Artsy Chair” is a good example of how they captured the feel of famous, iconic furniture designs without outright copying them.
From what I can tell, the Artsy Chair was inspired by two famous 20th century furniture designers:
The primary inspiration of the overall shape and curves seems to be from “The Egg Chair” by Arne Jacobsen, who was a renowned Danish architect and designer. He designed the Egg Chair in 1959 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.
The addition of the two cushions in an enclosed space seems to be from “The Ball Chair”, created by Finnish interior designer Eero Aarnio in 1963.
Both are considered classics in mid-century modern and Scandinavian furniture design, and are certainly for the rich and famous. Neither of these are exact matches for the Artsy chair, but you can certainly see the inspiration from both.
