The fireplace dates back to prehistoric times, when early humans used open hearths in caves and huts for warmth, cooking, and protection. In ancient Roman homes, hearths became more formal and were often connected to early chimneys. During the Middle Ages, fireplaces moved from central floor hearths to wall-built designs with chimneys, greatly improving ventilation. By the 18th–19th centuries, advances in engineering and materials led to more efficient designs, eventually evolving into modern fireplaces used mainly for heating, ambiance, and architectural style. In the 21st century, it’s getting less common to see fireplaces that actually burn wood and more common to see electric and gas fireplaces…I always felt this kind of took away the charm, but they’re better than nothing.
