Description
American players of Animal Crossing probably scratched their heads when they saw the “luxury car” in New Horizons. Why did they choose to display a car that looks like a boxy sedan from the 1970s?
Of course, those who understand Japanese culture will recognize the car in Animal Crossing as inspired by the Toyota Century. This is Japan’s version of a British Rolls-Royce, an American Cadillac, or a German Mercedes-Benz.
The first Toyota Century was produced in 1967; the design had minor changes in 1997 and 2018, but overall it pretty much looks the same as it always did. It’s main function is to chauffeur dignitaries around, most notably the Emperor of Japan himself. The emblem on the front grille is not the Toyota logo, but a logo of a phoenix.
In 2023, Toyota announced a new version of the Century that looks more like one of their SUVs.
How to get it in ACNH
The luxury car can be purchased from Nook's Cranny for 300,000 Bells or from Wardell's catalog for 270,000 Poki.
When you interact with the car, the car will beep and turn its headlights on. Interact again and you'll shut the lights off. The luxury car is the second-most expensive item you can buy (the Throne is the most expensive).
How to get it IRL
There's only one way to get a Toyota Century IRL. Go to Japan and visit a Toyota Store. Fork over $180,000 in US dollars to get one of the 30 Toyota Centuries that are produced every month. If that's too rich for your blood, you can always order a die-cast replica of a Toyota Century by Tomica for under $7.
